Travel Tips for South Africa and the Kruger National Park
Currency and Payments
- The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR).
- Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in towns, lodges, and camps, but it’s useful to carry some cash for tips, smaller purchases, or areas with limited facilities.
- ATMs are available in most towns and larger rest camps within Kruger.
Travel Documents
- A valid passport is required, with at least two blank pages.
- Depending on your nationality, a visa may be required—check before travel.
- Keep digital and paper copies of your passport, visa, and travel insurance in case of emergencies.
- An international driver’s license is recommended if you plan to hire a car.
Health and Safety
- Parts of the Kruger area fall within a malaria zone—consult your doctor about preventative medication.
- Stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and wear a hat to protect against the strong African sun.
- Always follow park rules: do not leave your vehicle outside designated areas and keep a safe distance from wildlife.
Crime Awareness
- South Africa has areas where crime can be a concern, but with common-sense precautions, most visits are trouble-free.
- Stay vigilant in cities: avoid displaying valuables, keep your bags close, and use hotel safes.
- When driving, keep car doors locked and windows closed in urban areas.
- In the Kruger National Park itself, the main focus is on wildlife safety rather than crime.
Transport and Driving
- South Africa drives on the left-hand side of the road.
- Road conditions are generally good, but wildlife and pedestrians may be encountered, especially near the park.
- Fuel stations are available in and around Kruger, but it’s wise to fill up when you can.
Communication
- English is widely spoken, along with 10 other official languages.
- Local SIM cards are affordable and provide good coverage in towns; coverage inside Kruger can be limited.
General Tips
- Tap water is safe to drink in most parts of South Africa, including Kruger rest camps.
- Dress in light, breathable clothing during the day and bring a jacket for cool mornings and evenings.
- Binoculars, cameras, and guidebooks will enhance your safari experience.
- Respect the environment: do not litter, feed animals, or disturb the natural setting.
